    The Setting

Riverview Barn occupies an elevated rural site with commanding views down the Tamar River — one of Tasmania's most picturesque waterways. The site's generous northerly orientation was the starting point for the entire design: with expansive views from the living area and all bedrooms, the home captures both the visual drama of the river landscape and the practical benefit of all-day sun.

The barn-style architectural form is a natural fit for this pastoral setting. Low-slung and grounded, the building reads as part of the agricultural landscape rather than an imposition upon it. The gabled roofline echoes the sheds and barns that have characterised Tasmanian farmland for generations, while the contemporary material palette ensures the home is unmistakably modern in its execution.

Siting the home on the elevated position required careful consideration of wind exposure and weather protection. The building form itself acts as a windbreak, creating sheltered outdoor spaces on the leeward side where the owners can enjoy the views in comfort. The entry is oriented away from the prevailing weather, ensuring a protected arrival even on the windiest days.

    Exterior & Materials

Timber, metal cladding, and stonework combine to create an interesting and robust exterior material palette at Riverview Barn. The interplay of these three materials — the warmth of timber, the precision of metal, and the weight of stone — creates a facade that rewards close inspection, with extensive detailing in the cladding finishes including an internal-to-external stonework detail that carries the language of the landscape directly into the home.

The stone elements ground the building in its site, creating a visual connection to the rocky outcrops that characterise the Tamar Valley. The timber — selected for its durability and weather resistance — will silver and patinate over time, developing a character that reflects the home's exposure to the elements. The metal cladding provides the precision and weather-tightness that the Tasmanian climate demands, its clean lines complementing the more organic textures of the timber and stone.

    Interior

The open-plan living area at Riverview Barn is a generous, light-filled space that makes the most of the site's extraordinary views. A polished concrete floor provides thermal mass and a durable, low-maintenance surface, while the raked ceiling draws the eye upward and creates a sense of volume. Large sliding doors open directly onto the views and outdoor areas, creating a seamless connection between inside and outside.

The colour palette is deliberately light, providing the perfect backdrop for the myriad pot plants that the owners have curated throughout the home. These living elements add colour, texture, and a sense of vitality to the interior, softening the contemporary architecture and creating a space that feels warm and personal.

Skylights in the ensuite and bathroom ensure that these rooms are filled with natural light — a detail that makes a remarkable difference to the daily experience of using these spaces. Rather than the dark, enclosed bathrooms that characterise many homes, Riverview Barn's wet areas are bright, airy spaces where you can shower under a slice of Tasmanian sky. It's the kind of thoughtful detail that separates a good home from a great one.
