Field House

The Story
Field House is a vibrant, contemporary take on rural living, nestled within a working farm in Longford. Breaking away from traditional farmhouse aesthetics, the home is a celebration of colour and texture, featuring an interior palette of pinks, greens, and yellows — without a drop of white paint in sight. This project was about architectural courage and technical precision, from the hand-rendered brickwork to the Tasmanian Blackwood joinery that brings a piece of the local landscape indoors.
Site & Exterior
Set in the middle of an expansive, sloping paddock, the site offered 360-degree views and significant environmental challenges. We managed a 700m lead-in for essential services and implemented a specialised perimeter drainage system to protect the structure from the high ground water levels typical of the area.
The exterior is defined by its cool rooflines and a sophisticated material split. Nubrik 'Acland Cream' bricks form a solid, earthy base that transitions into sleek Zincalume sheet metal cladding. The facade is punctuated by large-scale Victorian timber windows, featuring tilt-and-turn openings and a massive lift-and-slide door that disappears into the floor, blurring the line between the paddock and the living room.

Interior
Internally, Field House is a journey of height and light. Raked ceilings soar above polished concrete floors, which house a hidden hydronic heating system for year-round comfort. The design features complex curved walls and a remarkable multi-directional ceiling in the sitting room that challenged our finest trades. The layout is functional yet artistic, featuring bold mosaic tiling in the bathrooms and oversized internal sliding doors crafted from glass and timber.
The interior rejects the standard all-white palette in favour of a vibrant scheme of pinks, greens, and yellows. We utilised Tasmanian Blackwood joinery and complex curved plaster elements to create a bespoke feel, finished with tear-away beads around doors and windows to eliminate traditional architraves.

Materials & Performance
The build features a high-performance envelope using Pro Clima Solitex Extasana (walls) and Mento Plus (roof) wraps. We achieved a 7.3-star energy rating by combining 140mm timber framing — our first implementation of this system — with high-performance insulation. This project marked an innovation in our construction methodology, allowing for significantly increased insulation thickness and structural rigidity to support the large, heavy Victorian-sourced timber window systems.
