Building in Greens Beach
A quiet coastal village at the mouth of the Tamar River — Bass Strait beaches, Narawntapu National Park, and a lifestyle that's hard to leave.
Tasmania's Best-Kept Coastal Secret
Greens Beach sits where the Tamar River meets Bass Strait — a small, self-contained coastal community on the northern tip of the Tamar Valley. With a permanent population of around 247 (2021 Census), it's genuinely small, genuinely quiet, and one of the most unspoiled coastal positions in northern Tasmania.
Located approximately 61 kilometres north-west of Launceston and managed by West Tamar Council, Greens Beach serves as the gateway to Narawntapu National Park — sometimes called the "Serengeti of Tasmania" for its remarkable concentrations of wombats, wallabies, and Tasmanian devils at dusk. The park's access points include Greens Beach itself, making wildlife encounters part of everyday life here.
The community has all you need without the noise: a nine-hole golf course, tennis courts, a well-stocked general store, a caravan park, and a holiday park steps from the beach. In summer, the population swells considerably as holidaymakers arrive from Launceston and further afield — a dynamic that makes Greens Beach increasingly compelling as a short-term rental location.
We built the Greens Beach Shack here — one of our most-admired projects and a testament to what thoughtful coastal design can achieve on this distinctive stretch of coastline.

Why People Choose Greens Beach
Bass Strait Beaches
Greens Beach faces directly onto Bass Strait with sheltered swimming and long stretches of sand. The beach is a two-minute walk from most residential lots — morning swims, evening walks, and year-round coastal living.
Narawntapu National Park
Greens Beach is one of three access points to Narawntapu National Park. Wildlife at dusk — wombats, wallabies, pademelons — is an everyday occurrence, not a tourist experience.
Holiday Retreat Potential
The combination of national park access, beach frontage, and a relaxed village atmosphere makes Greens Beach a strong short-term rental market. Summer demand from Launceston and interstate visitors is consistent.
Fishing & Boating
The Tamar River mouth provides excellent fishing and boating access. The estuary environment is productive year-round, and Greens Beach has long been a favourite for recreational anglers from across northern Tasmania.
Nine-Hole Golf
One of Tasmania's most charming nine-hole courses sits within the community. Golf here means coastal views, unhurried play, and a club that genuinely welcomes visitors and new members.
True Sea Change
Greens Beach offers everything a sea change demands — beach access, wildlife, open space, and a community small enough to actually know your neighbours. An hour from Launceston but a world away in feel.
What to Know About Building at Greens Beach
Greens Beach falls under West Tamar Council's planning jurisdiction. Planning and building applications are lodged with and assessed by the council under the Tasmanian Planning Scheme and the West Tamar Local Provisions Schedule. Here's what to consider before you build:
- Salt air and Bass Strait wind are the defining build conditions. We specify marine-grade cladding, corrosion-resistant fixings, and sealed building envelopes as standard for all coastal builds — not as extras.
- Some lots near the foreshore carry coastal inundation or hazard overlays under the Tasmanian Planning Scheme. Check these early in your site selection — we can help interpret overlays before you commit to a block.
- Proximity to Narawntapu National Park means some areas may carry bushfire attack level (BAL) ratings. We assess BAL requirements site by site and design accordingly.
- Holiday and short-term rental builds require careful design for durability: robust finishes, low-maintenance materials, and layouts that hold up under high-turnover use.
- West Tamar Council planning officers are accessible and approachable for pre-application discussions — we recommend engaging them early for any discretionary development proposals.
Davies Design & Construction is based in Sheffield, approximately one hour south-west of Greens Beach. We built the Greens Beach Shack — so we've navigated the local build environment, the coastal material requirements, and the West Tamar planning process first-hand.
