Cloudscape

The Story
Cloudscape takes its name from the ever-changing sky that canopies this remarkable property. Set on an elevated rural site with 360-degree views, the home occupies a position that feels almost aerial — as if you're living inside the landscape rather than simply looking at it. Mountains, farmland, forests, and sky surround you in every direction, and the weather systems that roll across this high ground create a constantly shifting theatre of light and shadow.
The original home on this site had potential but wasn't making the most of its extraordinary setting. The renovation brief was clear: open up the home to its views, flood the interior with natural light, and create spaces that feel connected to the landscape in every season. Working with Align Architecture, Davies developed a design response that transformed the existing structure while respecting its bones — adding where needed, subtracting where possible, and reimagining the relationship between inside and outside.
The exterior is simple yet striking: dark metal cladding provides a confident, contemporary skin that contrasts dramatically with the warm timber accents. This palette — industrial precision meeting organic warmth — is a Davies hallmark, and it's particularly effective here, where the dark building form creates a bold silhouette against the ever-changing sky.

Interior & Views
The interior of Cloudscape has been reimagined as a gallery — a series of light-filled spaces that frame and celebrate the views beyond. The palette is deliberately restrained: white walls, natural timber, and polished surfaces provide a neutral backdrop that allows the landscape to be the primary artwork. This isn't minimalism for its own sake; it's a conscious decision to let the setting speak.
The new open-plan kitchen and living area is the centrepiece of the renovation. Where the original home had small, compartmentalised rooms that turned their backs on the views, the new layout opens up to expansive vistas of mountains and landscape in every direction. Large windows and sliding doors dissolve the boundary between inside and outside, creating a living space that changes character with the weather — bright and airy on clear days, moody and intimate when clouds roll in.
Every detail in the renovation has been considered through the lens of this extraordinary setting. Window positions were carefully studied to frame specific views. The kitchen orientation allows the cook to look out across the landscape while preparing meals. Even the bathroom captures a slice of sky through its high window. The result is a home where the experience of daily life is constantly enriched by the natural world outside — a home that earns its name with every passing cloud.
