Barts Bach Pad

The Brief & Vision
Barts Bach Pad takes its name from the Welsh tradition of the 'bach' — a small, simple holiday retreat. But this is no ordinary bach. Our clients wanted a compact getaway that would punch well above its weight in terms of design quality, spatial experience, and connection to the Tasmanian landscape. The brief was to create something intimate yet generous, simple yet sophisticated — a place to escape the everyday and reconnect with what matters.
The 'bach' concept informed every design decision: keep it compact, make every square metre count, and ensure that the quality of the experience far exceeds the modesty of the footprint.

Site & Design Response
The site offered a beautiful Tasmanian setting — native bush, filtered light, and the kind of quiet that city dwellers dream about. The design responds by sitting lightly on the land, its compact form nestled into the landscape rather than imposed upon it. Large openings on the northern side bring the bush inside, while the southern elevation is more restrained, providing weather protection and thermal performance.
The plan is efficient and clever. Open-plan living, dining, and kitchen occupy the prime position, with sleeping spaces arranged to maximise privacy within the compact footprint. Every room has a purpose, every circulation path serves double duty, and storage is integrated seamlessly into the architecture.

Materials & Craftsmanship
The material palette is honest and restrained — a deliberate choice that lets the quality of the construction speak for itself. External cladding is durable and low-maintenance, selected to weather gracefully and blend with the surrounding bush landscape. The colour palette draws from the natural tones of the site — bark, stone, moss, and shadow.
Internally, timber features prominently, providing warmth, texture, and acoustic softness. The kitchen is compact but fully functional. A compact building actually demands more precision than a large one, because there's nowhere to hide imperfections. Every line, every joint, every surface is visible and accountable.

Living Experience
Living at Barts Bach Pad is an exercise in mindful simplicity. The compact spaces encourage presence — you cook, you eat, you read, you look at the trees. Without the distractions of excess space, the quality of each moment is amplified. Morning coffee on the deck, watching the light change through the canopy. An afternoon nap with the breeze coming through the windows.
This is what the bach tradition is all about — creating a space that strips away the unnecessary and reveals the essential. And the essential, it turns out, is beautifully simple: good light, good materials, good company, and a deep connection to the landscape.
