Botanicus

The Story
Botanicus is a place of refuge and rejuvenation — a home that embodies creativity, innovation, and excellence in equal measure. The brief called for a modest, high-quality dwelling that would sit comfortably in its rural Tasmanian setting while providing its owners with a daily experience of beauty and calm. Working with Align Architecture, Davies developed a design that achieves the rare feat of being simultaneously simple and sophisticated.
The project is particularly notable for its budget discipline. Winning the HIA Custom Built Home under $500,000 category proves that exceptional architecture doesn't require an exceptional budget — it requires exceptional thinking. Every dollar in this project was spent intentionally, with the design team and builder collaborating to find creative solutions that delivered maximum impact for minimum expenditure. Materials were selected for their dual performance: the burnished concrete slab is both floor finish and thermal mass; the cathedral ceiling is both architectural statement and natural ventilation strategy; the Blackbutt timber is both weather protection and aesthetic expression.

Form & Exterior
The home's simple exterior form is reminiscent of a rural barn — a gabled roof on a rectangular plan that sits comfortably in the pastoral landscape without pretension or fuss. This barn-like form isn't merely stylistic; it's a practical response to the site conditions, creating a building that sheds water efficiently, resists wind loads, and provides generous interior volume without requiring complex structural solutions.
Blackbutt timber at the entry provides a warm welcome, its rich tones creating a threshold moment that signals the transition from the outside world to the calm interior. The timber will weather and silver over time, developing a patina that records the passing of seasons and connects the building ever more deeply to its landscape. Behind the timber, the primary cladding is low-maintenance and durable, selected for its ability to withstand Tasmania's variable climate without requiring regular attention.

Interior & Sustainability
Inside Botanicus, the material palette creates a modern aesthetic that's warm and inviting rather than cold and clinical. The burnished concrete slab provides the foundation — literally and figuratively — for the interior experience. Its subtle sheen reflects natural light, its thermal mass stabilises interior temperatures, and its durability means it will look as good in fifty years as it does today.
A custom-built concrete plinth in the living area anchors the space, providing a hearth-like focal point that serves as both seating and display surface. Above, the cathedral ceiling soars to the ridge line, creating a sense of spaciousness that makes the compact floor plan feel generous. Custom joinery throughout the home is crafted from Tasmanian hardwood, with clean lines and precise detailing that reflects Davies' commitment to craftsmanship.
Passive design principles underpin every decision. The orientation maximises solar gain in winter while providing shade in summer. Double glazing throughout reduces heat loss and improves acoustic comfort. Well-specified insulation in walls, floor, and ceiling creates a continuous thermal envelope. Together, these measures dramatically reduce the home's energy consumption, making it affordable to run and comfortable to live in year-round. Botanicus proves that sustainability isn't a premium add-on — it's simply good design.
