People, Quality, Velocity, Cost — The Only 4 Things You Need to Measure

By Luke Davies
Every builder needs four categories on their dashboard. Not twenty. Not fifty. Four.
People. Quality. Velocity. Cost.
People
- Toolbox talks done?
- Everyone signed in?
- Site clean?
- Uniforms on?
- Toilet clean?
- Safety reports logged?
Quality
- Any rework this week?
- Sub rework?
- Client complaints?
- Variations approved?
Velocity
- Are we on schedule?
- Any delays?
- Extensions of time?
- Missing milestones?
Cost
- On budget?
- POs without prices?
- Progress claims delayed?
All tallies. No complex reports. One sheet. 10–15 minutes to fill out.
The Philosophy
If people and quality are right, velocity and cost take care of themselves. When I visit a site, my team knows I'm going to check the toilet, check the sign-in, check the cleanliness. That's the people metric. And it flows into everything else. Start simple. Even a handwritten sheet works. Just get the habit.
