Our Home, Planet Earth: Building for a Sustainable Future

In an age of growing environmental awareness, 'sustainability' has become a buzzword. But what does it truly mean in the context of building our dream homes? Sustainability is about ensuring our actions today don't compromise the needs of future generations. But to truly achieve a sustainable future, we must go beyond simply doing less harm and actively seek to improve the environment.

    From Sustainability to Regenerative Design

Regenerative design enhances sustainability. While sustainability focuses on minimising negative impacts, regenerative design actively seeks to restore and regenerate. It's about creating homes that give back to the environment — generating more energy than consumed, restoring natural ecosystems and using materials that improve over time.

    Zero Waste Habitat

As more people ask questions about zero emissions, zero energy and zero material waste, the industry will be forced to respond. I encourage you to ask these questions of your design team and challenge them to work towards building a zero-waste habitat.

    • Zero energy: Generating as much energy as your home consumes over a year
    • Zero emissions: Eliminating fossil fuel reliance through electrification and renewables
    • Zero waste: Minimising construction waste and designing for material reuse
    Site planning and sustainable orientation
Thoughtful site orientation is the first step toward sustainability.

    Design Approaches Compared

    • Passive Solar: Focuses on solar heat gains to reduce heating costs — but can't control the sun or clouds
    • Net Zero: Produces more energy than consumed over a year — but doesn't necessarily address health and comfort
    • Passivhaus: The most rigorous standard addressing comfort, health, airtightness and energy
    • Living Building Challenge: The most rigorous green building certification in the world

    Your Environmental Impact

By building a dream home, you're undertaking a project that can make a positive contribution to the planet. Environmental impacts will only change if we do. Consider:

    • What energy sources will your home use?
    • Can you eliminate gas and go fully electric?
    • What happens to your construction waste?
    • Can your home generate more energy than it consumes?
