Function is the third of the Six Elements of a Dream Home. It covers the practical aspects of how your home will work for you — from daily habits and floor plan layout to efficient storage, accessibility and the relationships between spaces.

    Home Habits

Understanding your daily habits is crucial to designing a home that works for you. Think about your morning routine, your evening rituals, how you prepare meals, where you work, how you exercise. Your home should support and enhance these routines, not fight against them.

    Floor Area and Flow

How your rooms connect to each other — the flow — is one of the most important aspects of a home's design. A well-designed floor plan creates smooth transitions between spaces and supports how you actually live. Poor flow creates frustration, wasted space and clutter.

    Efficient Layouts

An efficient layout minimises wasted corridor and hallway space, maximising the usable area of your home. Consider how much space you need for circulation versus living. Every square metre of hallway is a square metre you can't use for something else.

    Storage and Housework

One of the most common complaints in any home is lack of storage. Think carefully about where you'll store everything from everyday items to seasonal equipment. A well-designed home has a place for everything, which dramatically reduces mess and cleaning time.

    Liveable Housing

Consider accessibility in your design — wider doorways, level entries, accessible bathrooms. Even if you don't need these features now, designing for them from the start is far cheaper than retrofitting later.

    Exercise: Map Your Daily Routine

Walk through a typical day and note every room or space you use, in order. This will help your designer understand your flow requirements and create a layout that supports your actual lifestyle.
