Growth vs Fixed Mindset on the Tools: An Unpopular Opinion
Here's an unpopular take about mindset on the tools: not everyone needs to be a growth-mindset go-getter.
Michael Bonney asked a room full of builders where they sit — growth or fixed. Then he dropped this: "If somebody's turning up on time, working safely, doing a good quality job — just tell me what to do. Is that such a bad thing?"
The room went quiet. Because he's right. You need those people.
The Harder Challenge
Managing the growth-mindset ones. They come at you with three ideas a day. And if you don't listen — or worse, you park their ideas and never follow up — they leave. Or worse: they stop caring. Growth slides back to fixed. And that's on you as the leader.
The Fix: Give Ideas a Home
The real leadership skill isn't getting everyone to think big. It's creating a system where both types thrive:
- Fixed-mindset workers get clear standards and stability
- Growth-mindset workers get a channel for their ideas — a board, a weekly review, something visible
- Everyone feels heard
A board. A weekly review. Something visual where people can see progress. That's the system that keeps your growth-mindset people engaged — and your fixed-mindset people delivering consistently.
