The Death of the Suggestion Box: How a CI Board Actually Works
Most suggestion boxes are graveyards for good ideas. Ideas go in. Nothing comes out. The team stops contributing. Sound familiar?
The Fix: A Continuous Improvement Board
Here's how it works:
- Anyone submits an idea — one word is fine
- Same day, same time, weekly — meet around the board
- Ideas get assigned to a person
- 30 days to action
- If stuck, the board owner steps in
- Done = moved to complete
Why It Works
The magic: the person who submitted the idea sees it moving. "Submitted" → "Assigned" → "In progress" → "Done." That visibility creates accountability, engagement, and momentum.
And critically: don't rip up cards. Ever. Even if an idea can't be actioned, keep it visible. That shows commitment to listening. The moment you throw away someone's idea is the moment they stop giving them to you.
Getting Started
We use a digital version in ClickUp. A whiteboard with sticky notes works just as well. The tool doesn't matter. Meeting around it weekly — that's what matters.
