The Story

Welcome to Pen-Y-Bryn, a striking custom-built home that perfectly balances architectural boldness with the warmth of a family sanctuary. Born from a deeply collaborative process between our team, the architects at Cumulus Studio, and the clients—who watched the build take shape from right next door—the project is an embodiment of modern elegance. Every detail was meticulously crafted to cater to contemporary living, ensuring convenience and comfort at every turn. From the initial concept to the final handover, the goal was to create a high-performing home that enhances lifestyle while respecting the character of its established surroundings.

The Site

Positioned on a challenging, steep slope in an established neighbourhood, Pen-Y-Bryn responds directly to its unique topography. The design works with the natural fall of the land, navigating level changes and preserving the mature greenery that defines the site. Building here required precision and care; we utilised specialised scaffolding and cranes to lower expansive window panes into place, ensuring the existing trees remained untouched. The result is a home that feels deeply anchored in its setting, balancing a sense of privacy with open vistas of the surrounding landscape.

The Exterior

The exterior is a captivating play of texture and tone, featuring a sophisticated mix of Bowral Bricks, dark Structuur Nailstrip, and the rich, natural hues of spotted gum. These materials are laid vertically to emphasise the home's height and clean, modern lines. A standout custom detail is the 6mm powder-coated aluminium window flashings, which replace traditional sills to create a sleek, contemporary profile. Large, high windows are strategically placed to flood the home with natural light while creating a captivating visual contrast against the solid brickwork blades.

The Interior

Inside, the home unfolds across multiple levels, connected by a seamless flow of light and high-end finishes. The spacious, open-plan living areas are highlighted by a rich palette of timber wall paneling and custom joinery that follows the site’s natural elevations. Comfort is built into the very foundation of the home, with a decoupled slab and hydronic heating ensuring a toasty atmosphere year-round. The heart of the home features a functional, designer kitchen and wet areas that showcase artisan curved tiling, creating a cohesive and visually pleasing environment that promotes a sense of tranquility.
